Arturo Fuente was born in Güines, Cuba, and emigrated to Key West, Florida, where he established A. Fuente & Company in 1912. The early decades were anything but smooth: a 1924 factory fire wiped out the operation entirely, halting production for more than two decades. The company rebuilt from the back porch of Arturo's home in Tampa's Ybor City, a city whose rolling tradition gave the family the craft labor to recover. The resilience encoded in those early years remains a defining feature of how the family talks about the brand.
The major strategic bet came when Carlos Fuente Sr. moved production to the Dominican Republic, a country then regarded by the industry as incapable of producing world-class wrapper leaf. In 1992, working plots of land in the Cibao Valley's Chateau de la Fuente estate, the family proved the skeptics wrong. The 1995 launch of Fuente Fuente OpusX — a full Dominican puro, wrapper included — was the breakthrough that placed the family in the top rank of the global premium market. Demand for OpusX has never caught up with supply, which tells you everything about what it did for the brand's reputation.
Today under Carlos Fuente Jr., the portfolio spans accessible everyday lines like the Hemingway Series and Rothschild to the ultra-premium Don Carlos, Añejo (aged in cognac barrels), and the perennially hard-to-find OpusX and its derivatives. Annual production exceeds 30 million cigars, making Arturo Fuente one of the largest premium handmade operations in the world — and still entirely family-owned, now in its fourth generation.
The house character skews toward medium-to-full strength with a smooth, refined delivery: cedar, cream, and spice in the entry lines; deep earth and concentrated tobacco at the top.
