Litto Gomez was a jeweler before tobacco claimed him. Born in the Dominican Republic, he pivoted from gemstones to leaf in the mid-1990s and founded La Flor Dominicana in 1996 alongside his wife Ines Lorenzo in Tamboril, just outside Santiago. The region had long been known for its tobacco traditions, and Gomez planted his operation in the heart of it, eventually acquiring estate land to grow his own ligero — the powerful top leaf that became the defining ingredient of the LFD identity.
From the beginning, Gomez pushed against convention. Where most Dominican producers emphasized light, elegant Connecticut-wrapped cigars for the export market, LFD leaned into body and strength. The Double Ligero line, which places Dominican estate-grown ligero at the core of a hearty filler blend, established the brand as a serious destination for smokers who wanted full power from island tobacco. The line eventually extended to a natural wrapper and a Maduro, both of which earned placements on Cigar Aficionado's annual Top 25 list.
The Chisel and LFD's Design Philosophy
Gomez's most enduring contribution to the craft may be the Chisel vitola — a figurado with a distinctive flattened, tool-like head that he reportedly conceived while chewing on a torpedo during a drive across the island. The unconventional shape became LFD's signature and spawned its own family of sizes. The Air Bender series, using Ecuadorian wrappers over Dominican estate tobacco, brought the brand a broader audience with a medium-full profile built around earth, chocolate, and measured spice. LFD remains independently owned and operates as one of the few fully vertically integrated boutique factories in the Dominican Republic.
