Foundation cigars

Nicholas Melillo spent eleven years at Drew Estate — rising to Executive VP of International Operations and serving as a key blender — before departing in 2014 to start Foundation Cigar Co. That apprenticeship in Estelí gave him deep relationships with Nicaraguan growers and factory teams, and it shows in the finished cigars: Foundation's blends are precise, purposeful, and almost always age-worthy.

The debut release, El Güegüense — named after Nicaragua's centuries-old satirical folk drama, sometimes translated as "The Wise Man" — launched in 2015 and immediately made critics' year-end lists. Produced at the TABSA factory in Jalapa, it uses a silky Jalapa wrapper over an all-Nicaraguan core that opens with leather and cedar and deepens steadily. Tabernacle followed in 2016, made at the A.J. Fernández factory in Estelí; the line leans into a darker, fuller Connecticut Broadleaf-wrapped profile that draws comparisons to the best Maduros on the market.

Charter Oak extended the portfolio with approachable everyday vitolas at a friendlier price, while Highclere Castle — a licensed collaboration with the English estate famous as the filming location for Downton Abbey — delivers three distinct expressions (Edwardian, Victorian, Senetjer) built around Nicaraguan filler with varying wrapper origins. Together the four lines give the brand unusual range: from a crisp natural-wrapper flagship to a full-bodied English-heritage line, each with identifiable construction standards and a backstory worth knowing.

Foundation remains a boutique operation distributed through specialty retailers, with Melillo still handling blending personally.
