AJ Fernandez cigars

Abdel "AJ" Fernandez grew up in San Luís, Pinar del Río, Cuba, where his grandfather had founded the San Lotano brand and tobacco farming was a family inheritance rather than a career choice. By age thirteen he was working tobacco farms after school, learning fermentation, priming, and sorting before most cigar smokers could tell a Corojo from a Connecticut. In 2003, Fernandez left Cuba for Nicaragua and began rolling cigars in Estelí for established clients including Rocky Patel and Cigars International. Within a few years he had built Tabacalera Fernandez into one of the most in-demand contract manufacturing operations in the Nicaraguan premium market.

His own brands run the full range of his blending ambitions. New World, launched in 2014 in collaboration with his father Ismael, became the line that introduced a wide US audience to Fernandez's directional style: full-bodied, layered with dark fruit and pepper, priced accessibly. San Lotano carries the family name forward, with multiple expressions exploring Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos. Bellas Artes, debuted in 2016, showcases a hybrid wrapper Fernandez calls "Rojita" — a cross of Connecticut 8212, Corojo '99, and Havana 2000 strains — that gives the line a distinctive reddish sheen and sweetened mid-palate. Enclave reaches further, blending Cameroon binder, Nicaraguan filler, and Ecuadorian Habano wrapper into a three-country construction.

Contract Legacy

Beyond his own portfolio, Fernandez has blended for brands including Aging Room, Oscar Valladares, and others — a body of work that has made him one of the most influential and prolific blenders in the modern Nicaraguan industry. His Quattro Nicaragua Maestro collaboration with Aging Room won Cigar Aficionado's #1 Cigar of the Year for 2019.
