The Enclave Broadleaf arrived in 2017 as the darker, richer sibling to the original Enclave. Connecticut Broadleaf is a maduro-process wrapper — grown in the Connecticut River Valley and fermented until it turns almost black — and it dramatically shifts the Enclave's character toward chocolate, coffee, and leather.

What it tastes like

Cocoa powder and vanilla come forward immediately, a hallmark of well-fermented Broadleaf. The leather and earth notes emerge through the middle, contributed by the Nicaraguan filler blend including Piloto Cubano seed tobacco. Coffee develops toward the final third. In August 2019, Cigar Aficionado gave this a 93-point score for its "sweet and earthy profile of cocoa powder, vanilla beans, and leather." That rating holds up.

Who it's for

If you love the Enclave but want more body and sweetness, this is the natural next step. Medium-to-full strength, and the 5-by-52 Robusto format is a 45-minute commitment. Pair with dark chocolate or an aged bourbon that mirrors the cocoa and leather notes.

This is the maduro expression of the Enclave family. For more on how broadleaf wrappers change a blend's character, read the maduro vs Connecticut guide. New to this strength range? Start with the cigar strength guide. Rate and log it in the Casa DNC app.
