Gurkha cigars

Kaizad Hansotia's path to the cigar business began in 1988 on a vacation in Goa, India, where he encountered a Portuguese vendor selling handmade cigars under the Gurkha name — a label with origins more than a century old, referencing the famed Nepalese soldiers who served in the British Army. Hansotia, then in the luxury watch trade and based between Hong Kong and London, bought the entire inventory and the name for $143. The following year he set about reviving the brand in earnest, repositioning it at the upper end of the premium market.

The approach Hansotia took was unabashedly theatrical. Gurkha became known as much for its packaging — velvet-lined humidors, hand-numbered bands, elaborate gift sets — as for the tobacco inside. That marketing identity proved effective: the Grand Reserve, a Connecticut Shade-wrapped Dominican cigar infused with Louis XIII cognac and packaged in a glass tube, became the top-selling cognac-infused cigar in the category. The Cellar Reserve line, introduced in 2007, shifted the conversation toward aged tobacco: its expressions use leaf aged 15, 18, or 21 years, producing cigars with the kind of settled complexity that long fermentation and patience can deliver. The Ghost line, rolled at the Abe Flores factory in the Dominican Republic, leans darker and fuller-bodied, built around a Brazilian Arapiraca Maduro wrapper.

Gurkha sits at an interesting intersection in the premium market — a brand with genuine luxury-tier aged-tobacco credentials and a showman's instinct for presentation that has made it recognizable well outside traditional cigar circles.
