Flavor profile

Earthy · Spice · Creamy · Roast

The Master Select is one of Gurkha's longest-running Nicaraguan-produced blends, originally crafted by cigarmaker Fidel Olivas in 2001 and currently produced at Premium Cigars S.A. in Nicaragua. The blend has been reintroduced and updated over the years, but the core spec — Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Honduran binder, and a Nicaraguan-Dominican filler — has stayed consistent with the original vision.

What it tastes like

The Ecuadorian Habano wrapper brings a familiar earthiness and the warm spice notes that characterize Habano leaf from that growing region. Against the Honduran binder, which tends toward a woody, slightly sweet character, the opening of the Master Select Toro presents dark wood and cinnamon spice. The Nicaraguan-Dominican filler blend adds walnut and cream through the middle third, building toward coffee and leather in the final stages. The 6 x 50 Toro format gives the blend enough length to complete its arc. Strength finishes solidly at medium-full.

Who it's for

The Master Select is a well-rounded choice for experienced smokers who want a Nicaraguan-made cigar that favors complexity over brute strength. The Honduran binder is an unusual touch in a Nicaraguan-dominant blend — it's the element that makes the Master Select distinctive relative to more common all-Nicaraguan profiles. For context on how this compares to all-Nicaraguan puros, see our Cuban vs Nicaraguan guide. Pair with a single malt Scotch or aged rum.
