Dion Giolito was running a retail cigar shop called Fumare in Reno, Nevada when he commissioned a small run of custom blends in 2006 — 50 boxes sold as a house exclusive, labeled with the cryptic name "88," signifying the year he returned to Reno. The cigars found an audience, Giolito gave the brand a name — Illusione, drawn from conspiracy culture, numerology, and illuminati mythology — and a new boutique was born.
The Original Documents line cemented Illusione's reputation. Submitted to Cigar Aficionado for a vertical rating, the cg:4 Corona Gorda was ranked No. 7 in the magazine's Top 25 of 2007 — a stunning result for a tiny brand out of Nevada. The line's vitola designations follow an idiosyncratic code of letters, tildes, and numbers that became a signature of the brand's personality and attracted exactly the kind of cigar nerd who enjoys decoding labels. Giolito's blends — primarily Aganorsa-grown Nicaraguan tobacco — skew medium to full, with leather, earth, dark coffee, and pepper as recurring throughlines.
Production began at Raíces Cubanas in Honduras before shifting to TABSA, the Fernández family's large-scale operation in Estelí, Nicaragua, which today handles the bulk of Illusione's output. Epernay remains a notable exception, continuing at its original Honduran home and offering a slightly different profile from the core Nicaraguan range. The Rothchildes line — a short-format petite robusto using a Mexican San Andrés wrapper — has proven one of the brand's most popular limited expressions.
Illusione stays deliberately opaque: limited distribution, minimal marketing, no flashy collaborations. Among boutique enthusiasts it is considered a benchmark.
