Epernay takes its name from the French town built on chalk in the heart of the Champagne region — and the analogy is deliberate. Dion Giolito designed this line to be lighter and more refined than his Original Documents, with a similar AGANORSA tobacco foundation but a more elegant, delicate expression. Le Ferme is the robusto of the lineup and the size that earned the Epernay a #1 cigar of the year spot from Cigar Aficionado in 2009.
What it tastes like
A shade-grown Nicaraguan Corojo '99 Cafe Rosado wrapper keeps Le Ferme in medium territory — stone fruit, honey, and cream carry the first half, while cedar and light spice emerge through the second. The finish is clean and sweet, with none of the pepper intensity you'd get from the Original Documents. Construction is excellent: an even burn and a draw that never feels forced.
Why it scored #1
The 2009 Cigar Aficionado #1 ranking put Illusione — then still a very small boutique brand — on the radar for thousands of smokers who hadn't encountered Giolito's work. Le Ferme earned it: at medium strength with a sophisticated, champagne-like profile, it bridges the gap between approachable and complex in a way few robustos manage.
For everyday smoking
Le Ferme is a genuinely great everyday cigar for experienced smokers looking for something refined without full-body intensity. Pair it with champagne (fitting), a light coffee, or a crisp white wine.
