Bolívar cigars

Jose F. Rocha founded the Bolívar brand in Havana in 1901, naming it after Simón Bolívar, the Venezuelan general who led six South American nations to independence from Spain in the early nineteenth century. The imagery on the box — Bolívar's portrait framed by medals and heraldry — has barely changed in over a century, and neither has the philosophy: this is a powerful cigar, unapologetically so.

Rocha registered the brand formally in Havana in 1921. After the 1960 nationalization, Bolívar passed to the Cuban state and today is produced by Habanos S.A., with rolling done at the Partagás factory complex in Havana. The two brands share a factory address and a reputation for strength, though Bolívar pushes further — it is widely regarded as the most full-bodied regular-production marca in the entire Habanos system, with dark, dense blends characterized by leather, dark earth, espresso, and a lingering pepper finish.

The Royal Coronas (a robusto) is the most approachable entry point and remains one of the best-selling Habanos robustos in markets outside the US. The Belicosos Finos, a pyramidal torpedo, rewards patience with layers of complexity that few other Havanas can match at the price. The Coronas Gigantes — a double corona — is for those who want the full Bolívar experience across a long smoke.

Bolívar has no major non-Cuban counterpart produced for the US market at the same profile and scale, making it one of the few historic Habanos marcas whose identity remains essentially singular and Cuban.
