Flavor profile

Earthy · Spice · Roast

The King Is Dead launched alongside Long Live the King in 2014, but it's the darker sibling — literally. The Negrito wrapper (a seldom-used Dominican tobacco with a dark, toothy, oily surface) sets it apart from nearly everything else on the shelf. The Premier (5½ x 50) is the line's signature size, and it earned the King Is Dead name its reputation.

What it tastes like

That Dominican Negrito wrapper — harvested in 2008 — drives the first impression: dark earth, black pepper, and a dense leathery richness. The Corojo binder adds structure, and the three-component filler (HVA 20/20, Corojo Ligero, and Negrito Viso — all Dominican) piles on depth without going one-dimensional. Coffee and cedar emerge in the second third; the finish is long and dry. This is an all-Dominican, full-bodied experience with no filler from Central America. Made at Tabacalera William Ventura.

Who it's for

The King Is Dead rewards patients smokers who've moved past medium-bodied territory. If you're comparing it to a Nicaraguan full-body, read our Dominican vs. Nicaraguan guide — the profiles are meaningfully different. Pair it with a peated Scotch, aged rum, or black coffee. If the strength level is new to you, the cigar strength guide will help you calibrate.
