Flavor profile

Sweet · Spice · Earthy · Creamy

Robert Caldwell launched Long Live the King in 2014 to prove that the Dominican Republic could produce a bold, complex cigar without leaning on a Nicaraguan identity. The Heater is the line's slim corona — 5¾ inches with a 46 ring gauge — and it's often the vitola that makes first-time Caldwell smokers believers.

What it tastes like

The all-Dominican Corojo wrapper and binder do most of the heavy lifting. The filler blends 50% Dominican Corojo Ligero (2006), 40% Nicaraguan Habano Ligero (2007), and 10% Peruvian Viso Pelo de Oro (2008) — a rare Peruvian leaf that rounds the blend out with surprising sweetness. The result opens with dark chocolate and black pepper, then transitions through toasted oak and earthy leather, finishing with a creamy, buttery note that lingers. The Heater earned a 91 from Cigar Aficionado. Body and strength track medium-to-full, building steadily. Made at Tabacalera William Ventura in Santiago.

Who it's for

If you enjoy Dominican vs. Nicaraguan tobacco debates, the Heater is a convincing argument for the Dominican side. The narrower ring gauge concentrates the flavor and makes it a smart post-dinner smoke — long enough to enjoy but not a two-hour commitment. Pair it with a bold espresso or a neat bourbon. Check the cigar strength guide if you're deciding whether to start here or step up to the Marquis.
