Oliva cigars

The Oliva family's relationship with tobacco began in Cuba in 1886, when patriarch Melanio Oliva first planted Cuban-seed leaf. Political upheaval drove the family out — first Castro's Cuba, then Nicaragua's Sandinista period — but each displacement carried the family's agricultural expertise closer to the Estelí and Jalapa valleys that would eventually make their name. Gilberto Oliva Sr. returned to Nicaragua in the 1990s and formally established Oliva Cigars in 1995.

The timing proved fortunate. Nicaragua's premium tobacco had been largely overlooked by the American market, and the Oliva family's deep agricultural roots gave them access to parcels producing ligero of exceptional quality. Within a decade they had grown into Nicaragua's second-largest grower of Cuban-seed tobacco, with production from both Estelí and Ocotal facilities. Annual volume reached 13 million cigars in the 2000s while premium quality held steady — a difficult balance that few operations manage.

The flagship Serie V, a full-bodied blend with an Ecuadorian Habano sungrown wrapper over Nicaraguan long filler, established the brand's critical reputation. The Serie V Melanio — named for the family patriarch, released annually in a limited run — built on that foundation with even higher-priming ligero from the Jalapa Valley and an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. In 2014 Cigar Aficionado named the Melanio its Cigar of the Year, the clearest possible signal that Oliva had arrived at the industry's highest tier.

In 2016 the family sold a majority stake to Swedish Match, which later became part of the Scandinavian Tobacco Group, though the Oliva family has remained involved in production. The core lineup — Serie O for everyday smoking, Serie G at medium body, Serie V for the full-strength enthusiast, and the Melanio for special occasions — continues unchanged.
