Drew Estate cigars

Drew Estate started not in a tobacco-growing valley but in a 16-square-foot kiosk at the World Trade Center in New York City. Jonathan Drew Sann and Marvin Samel opened it in 1995 with a deliberately unconventional sensibility — they wanted to bring cigar culture to an audience that felt excluded from the mahogany-and-members-club version of the hobby. The early blends were produced in partnership with other manufacturers, but the concept was already in place.

Everything changed after 1998. Hurricane Mitch devastated the company's supply chain and pushed it to the edge of bankruptcy, but Jonathan Drew's response was to move to Nicaragua rather than retreat from it. He established a factory in Estelí, eventually building what would become La Gran Fábrica Drew Estate, a facility capable of producing 100,000 cigars a day. Nicaragua's ligero-forward tobacco profile suited the bold, expressive style the brand had always aimed for.

The Acid line — introduced in collaboration with urban artist Scott Chester — brought an entirely new smoker into premium cigar shops: infused with botanicals, herbs, and essential oils, Acid Kuba Kuba became one of the best-selling long-filler cigars in the United States. It remains both divisive and beloved. Liga Privada, launched in 2007 as a small-batch, high-premium line, made the complementary argument: Drew Estate could compete at the very top of the market. Liga Privada No. 9 and T52, built on dark Connecticut Broadleaf wrappers and estate-grown Nicaraguan filler, consistently earn some of the highest ratings in the industry.

Swisher International acquired Drew Estate in 2014. The production infrastructure and key personnel remained, and the brands have maintained both their identity and their critical standing.
