Cigar size chart
Every common cigar vitola — with length, ring gauge, diameter, and smoke time, drawn to scale. Two numbers describe any cigar: length in inches and ring gauge(thickness, in 64ths of an inch). Here's how they all compare.
Ring gauge converter
Diameter
19.8 mm
Diameter
0.78″
Ring gauge is a cigar's thickness in 64ths of an inch, so a 50-ring cigar measures 50⁄64″ across. Bigger ring = thicker cigar = a cooler, often fuller smoke.

Cigar sizes — frequently asked
- What is ring gauge on a cigar?
- Ring gauge is a cigar's thickness, measured in 64ths of an inch. A 50 ring gauge cigar is 50⁄64 of an inch (about 19.8 mm) across. The bigger the ring gauge, the thicker the cigar — which usually means a cooler, fuller, longer smoke.
- What is the most popular cigar size?
- The toro (about 6 inches by 52 ring gauge) is the most popular modern size, with the robusto (about 5 by 50) close behind. Both balance a generous smoke time with an easy-to-handle shape, which is why beginners and veterans alike default to them.
- What's the biggest and smallest cigar size?
- Among common shapes, large figurados like the diadema (around 8.5 by 52) and salomon (7.25 by 57) are the biggest, while petit coronas (4.5 by 42) and petit robustos (4 by 50) are the smallest full-flavored options. Cigarillos are smaller still.
- Does cigar size affect flavor and smoke time?
- Yes. Length mostly sets smoke time — a longer cigar lasts longer. Ring gauge shapes how it smokes: thicker cigars burn cooler and can carry more filler tobacco (often fuller flavor), while thin shapes like the lancero are wrapper-forward and smoke warmer.
- Do these cigar dimensions vary by brand?
- They do. The measurements here are typical, representative values for each vitola — individual brands name and size their cigars a little differently, so a "robusto" from one maker might be 5 by 50 and another 4.75 by 52. Use the chart as a guide, not an exact spec.
