Replace packs when they turn stiff or crackly (usually every 2–4 months). Don’t mix different RH packs in one box — they fight each other.

The simple rule
Boveda packs are sized by how much humidity they can hold and release. The maker's rule of thumb is one 60 g pack per 25 cigars, or one 320 g pack per 100. The packs don't change your humidity faster with more of them — they just last longer and recover quicker after you open the lid.
Under-packing is the usual mistake. A single 60 g pack rattling around a 100-count humidor will exhaust itself in weeks and let humidity sag. When in doubt, add one more pack than the minimum.
One caveat the calculator flags: a new wooden humidor needs seasoning first, or it will steal moisture from your packs and read low no matter how many you add.
Boveda pack FAQ
- How many Boveda packs do I need?
- Boveda's own guidance is one 60 g pack for every 25 cigars, or one 320 g pack per 100. So a 50-count humidor wants two 60 g packs; a 150-count wants six 60 g packs or two 320 g. Round up — extra capacity just means the packs last longer.
- What RH should I use — 62, 65, 69, or 72%?
- 65% is the safe all-rounder most smokers settle on. Drop to 62% in humid climates or if you like a crisper draw and lower mold risk; go 69% for oily maduros and a richer feel. 72%+ burns slow and plush but flirts with a tight draw. Pick one and don't mix RH levels in the same box.
- When should I replace Boveda packs?
- Swap a pack when it goes stiff, dry, or crackly rather than soft and pliable — usually every 2 to 4 months depending on how leaky your humidor is and how often you open it. A pack that's still squishy is still working.
- Can I use Boveda to season a new humidor?
- Yes, but a brand-new wooden humidor will pull moisture out of your storage packs for weeks. Season the wood first — Boveda sells dedicated 84% seasoning packs, or you can wipe and rest it — then add your maintenance packs once the box holds steady humidity.
